WSACC Honors Executive Director’s Retirement & Announces Successor

The Water and Sewer Authority of Cabarrus County announces the retirement of Executive Director Michael Wilson on August 30, 2024, after nearly 30 years of service to the organization.

The Authority board has appointed Chad VonCannon, the Authority’s current Engineering Director, as the new Executive Director following Wilson’s retirement. VonCannon has been with the Authority since 2007 and in the role of Engineering Director since 2019.

Wilson was hired in 1997 as the Finance Director and served in this role until 2009 when he was named Deputy Executive Director of Finance. He was named Acting Executive Director in 2015 and Executive Director in 2017.

Wilson came to the Authority with more than 15 years of progressive experience in state and local government, with significant experience in financial management. His expertise in finance has been recognized for 27 years by Earning the National Award of Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting.

Beyond his resume, Wilson is respected across Cabarrus County and the region by those who have had the opportunity to work with him in any capacity.

“It has been a pleasure and honor to work with Michael for so many years,” said Jonathan Marshall, Water and Sewer Authority Board Member and Deputy County Manager for Cabarrus County.

“Michael has been a steady, even-keeled, and incredibly effective colleague. The organization will miss his leadership and professionalism. I will miss those also, but even more so, I will miss the person he is.”

“The board is extremely grateful for Michael’s service and leadership over the past nearly three decades.  His steady hand has been evident over the past few years as we have moved rapidly to expand the Rocky River Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant,” said board chair Mike Legg.

“We are also excited to name Chad as the new executive director. His Cabarrus County roots, long tenure with the organization, and his combination of management and technical skills made him the ideal candidate to lead our organization.”
